Last year, I had to move to England for my master’s program in International Marketing, and the culture shock I experienced was beyond shocking. It was tough getting accommodation and settling down.
Looking back, it would have been easier if I knew some things, but it’s okay. You learn every day.
One thing I was used to in Nigeria was getting a haircut weekly or every other week. So, I continued the tradition when I got to the UK.
The first thing I noticed was the long waiting times. At one point, I waited 3 hours in the shop to get to my turn. Only to realize I was meant to book an appointment before coming.
The next time, I tried booking an appointment, and the barber said he was booked full all day and asked if I could come at 10 pm that night or by 2 pm the next day.
So, I asked if there was any other free barber, and he said yep.
I must warn you. Never let the free barber cut you.
After the haircut, I felt balder than Jason Statham because my hairline had taken a backseat.
And I still had to pay the £15 for the bloody haircut.
So, my fiancée told me, “Why don’t you learn to cut your hair?”
Despite being terrified that I might mess my hair up, I watched tons of YouTube videos, then went on Amazon to get a self-cut mirror and a clipper and finally did it.
And that’s when everything changed.
This was how I did, and I have since gotten better.
Now, instead of the long waiting times and £15 weekly, I do it myself. And save £795 yearly.
Quick question: Do you cut your hair or braid it yourself? I would love to know.
